PROJECT

Stationeries Set, Collaterals, Environmental Graphic and Social Media Presence

16/09/20 - 13/11/20 (Week 8 - Week 12)

After designing our logo, we then had to make a stationery set for it. This includes business cards, letterhead and continuation sheet, invoice, and envelope. Mr. Vinod demonstrated how to make each stationery design in Illustrator so we could follow along.

Here are my first few attempts for the stationery set:

Mr. Vinod said that we should try to have fun with our stationaries. Instead of using my pattern in each stationary, I can even use the illustrations that I made for our Publishing Design module.

After completing the stationaries, we had to make a collateral for our brand. We had to choose a minimum of 4 items for our collateral, and I chose a notebook, sketchbook, mug, tote bag, and bookmark.

Here are my first attempts:

Mr. Vinod said that I should choose collaterals that are relevant to my brand. He also said that I kept using my pattern with the same colour scheme so I should switch it up a bit. Like my stationary, I could use my illustrations for Publishing Design for my collateral.

FEEDBACK

Week 9:

General feedback: The envelope front must be white or off-white so each mail can be scanned. The address can be on the back while the other info can be on the front.

Specific feedback: The business card looks good, now I can include one of my secondary colours. Mr. Vinod suggested one of the stars in my pattern could be in a different colour to stand out or have contrast. Montserrat is a good typeface and it works well in my stationaries. Make the logo a bit bigger so its more visible as the business card is generally small. Be more experimental with the layout of the letterhead, don't just follow the FB session.

Week 10:

General feedback: We should have more fun with our stationaries and collateral, instead of repeatedly using our patterns everywhere. For the environment graphics, the set up should look appropriate to our brand and the size of our company.

Specific feedback: I can use my illustrations from publishing design for my collateral and stationaries instead of using patterns. It also goes with my occupation which is a graphic novelist. My collateral should be more focused on my brand and not just any random collaterals. For the environment graphics, the set up should look appropriate to the brand. A small studio or space is more suitable to my brand compared to a large office space.

REFLECTION

Experience: Week 9 (23/10/20); Making the stationaries felt easy because we got to follow Mr. Vinod's demonstration video. Week 10 (30/10/20); It's a bit tricky to find the balance between making a creative and fun stationary and still keeping it professional-looking. Week 11 (08/10/20); I imagined making the brand guide to be difficult but it wasn't really too bad because we already have most of the content down. Week 12 (13/11/20); Like the stationaries, the brand guide also has to look nice while being professional so the balance needs to be implemented.

Observation: Week 9 (23/10/20); I never realised that a lot of thought is put into creating a layout for stationaries, especially in the placement of text and hierarchy of information. Week 10 (30/10/20); I think I didn't give much room for experimentation in my stationaries because I just followed along with the demonstration video. Week 11 (08/10/20); The brand guide is basically just the logo 9 items but in a more proper and professional format compilation. Week 12 (13/11/20); Once again, I was not being as experimental in my work as I'd like mainly due to time constraints and feeling like I had to make the brand guide look professional.

Findings: Week 9 (23/10/20); Stationaries should look nice and presentable but it should also carry its function which is to have info about your brand. Week 10 (30/10/20); I found that the layout and placement for stationaries is different from making a book layout because their purposes are different. Week 11 (08/10/20); Putting in the images and logos was a breeze, but writing info about it was a bit difficult if the brand guide I'm referencing doesn't have exactly the same topics. Week 12 (13/11/20); I found it quite hard to make my brand guide look playful and interesting.

This lengthy article goes in-detail of how to create a brand style guide. It gives a step-by-step explanation of what to include, how to arrange the content, as well as some tips and tricks to create a good brand style guide.

23/10/20 - 13/11/20 (Week 9 - Week 12)

This website has a variety of branding style guidelines that anyone can access with an account. It's quite difficult to find brand guides online because companies don't simply give out their information. The brand guides in this website are from a wide range of brands from Spotify to Nasa. Most of the guides aren't the full brand guide but it shows enough data for you to understand the brand to a certain extent.

This website has been very helpful in making my brand guide because I have access to a lot of real-life brand guides as reference.
