PROJECT

Week 1 (29/03/22)

For our first class, Mr. Azrisal briefed the class on what we needed to do for this module. There will only be one assignment for the whole semester, which is to create a project based on one of these 3 topics:

1. Our research dissertation paper
2. A client project
3. The 17 UN sustainable development goals

Next week, we will have to show a few ideas to get one approved as our major project.

Initially, I thought that we could base our final project on anything, so I already had a few ideas in mind before coming into the class. After finding out we can only work with those 3 topics, I was a bit blank. I couldn't really come up with an idea from my dissertation, and finding a client was also difficult in this short timeframe. I figured that my best option would be to pick a topic off of the 17 UN goals as there was a variety to choose from.

Week 2 (05/04/22)

I managed to come up with 2 ideas:

Idea 1: Bring awareness to local endangered species

The objective of this topic is to emphasize the increasing rate of local endangered species, and to highlight the reasons for the cause of their endangerment (such as poaching, building plantations, urbanization, etc.) The goal is to make people not only understand how their actions impact the animals, but also guilt-trip them into doing better for the environment.

Idea 2: The 7 deadly sins (of the Malaysian government)

The objective of this topic is to bring more awareness to the problems in Malaysia, and highlight them to improve the country's development. 7 contrary virtues will act as the solutions to strengthen the society and fulfill the goal of being a better country.

Feedback:
The feedback given was that my first idea was too general and not something new. Mr. Asrizal seemed to prefer my second idea (I do, too). He proposed that I can do the posters in an illustrative satirical style. I should research for inspiration from political art such as Fami Reza's designs, but I should not be too direct. Having 14 posters and a digital campaign is enough, but I need to also create a booklet that explains my project.

Week 3 (12/04/22)

I put my ideas into a Google Slide so it is easier to present:

I updated my idea from the 7 deadly sins of the Malaysian government to the Malaysian society.

(Updated) Idea 2: The 7 deadly sins (of Malaysians/ the society)

The objective of this topic is to bring more self-awareness to locals, emphasizing that change starts from ourselves; eventually strengthening the society and creating unity amongst all Malaysians to fulfill the goal of being a better country.

Feedback:
The feedback given was that I should be more specific in some of the sins. Mr. Asrizal suggested that for wrath/anger, I can try to use road rage instead of racial discrimination. For sloth, I can find statistics that relate to laziness in Malaysia, and the same goes for envy. When I showed my sketches, he said they currently look like newspaper advertisements. I have to not be afraid to be offensive or harsh for the posters to have that satirical feel. Next week, I have to find more references on political art and work on one detailed sketch.

Week 4 (21/04/22)

Our class falls on a public holiday (Nuzul Al-Quran) so we had an online session on Thursday.

Feedback:
The feedback given was that so far my content and ideas are fine. My newest sketch is also fine, but I would need to work on the sketch digitally (finalized and with colour) so that Mr. Asrizal can see whether the styling works. He also confirmed that our presentation will be on week 8, which is more of a progress check rather than an idea validation.

Week 5 (26/04/22)

I digitized my sketch (still a work-in-progress).

Feedback:
The feedback given was that the poster needed to be more 'dark'. Since my poster is still a work in progress, I can't tell whether the styling is OK or not yet. I have to figure out how to add in more dark elements. Dark colours isn't necessary, just the design/characters itself.

Week 6 (03/05/22)

Raya holiday.

Week 7 (10/05/22)

Updated poster:

Feedback:
The updated poster looks much better, and I can use this styling for the rest of the posters. Mr. Asrizal chose the first AR concept, and suggested that the virtue can be a separate collateral, not necessarily a poster (booklet, flyer, etc.) The digital campaign can be posted anytime later, not necessarily now unlike the exhibition.

Week 8 (20/05/22)

Feedback:
The feedback given was that I may not be able to deliver all my collaterals as it is already week 8 and I've only done one poster. I added in a microsite because previously I felt like I didn't have enough deliverables, but now I think I might leave it out. Mr. Vinod told me to think about what's my main priority in doing this project, and who it would reach - because the deliverables has to be accessible to them. For example, the booklet would suit better for the older people who aren't so tech savvy, and also Kampung folks.

Week 10 (31/05/22)

I finished the Gluttony poster animation and executed the AR filter on Spark AR, however I encountered a big problem. I could not publish it on Instagram because the file was too big. I tried various ways of reducing the file size, but because my animation is raster-based, it was just too large for an Instagram filter. I proposed a few alternatives of softwares to try and execute the AR filter, but I am inexperienced in them so it would be a challenge.

Feedback:
Try to figure out how to publish the AR animation filter on Instagram, because it is the most convenient app (as almost everyone has it). My other options would be more difficult for the viewer to operate, and would require them to download another app which is a hassle.

Week 11 (07/06/22)

I've finalized the Greed poster as well as the Lust poster, and started animating it too. I made a shorter, minimal animation for the Gluttony poster, but it was still too big for Spark AR to publish to Instagram.

Feedback:
Change the background of the Lust poster as it needs to be more colorful, to match the Gluttony poster. Similarly, the Greed poster background should also be more colorful. Keep trying to figure out how to get the AR filter onto Instagram.

Week 12 (14/06/22)

I changed the backgrounds for the Lust and Greed, and finished the Pride poster too.

Feedback:
The feedback given was to not use images for the background, and just keep everything vector. The Greed poster background might be too dark, so make it brighter.

Week 13 (21/06/22)

Feedback:
Do not use images for the background, and instead just keep everything vector. The Greed poster background might be too dark, so make it brighter. Remove the frame from the Lust poster to keep it consistent with the other posters. The Envy poster needs more visual hierarchy, right now the focus or main subject is unclear.

Week 14 (28/06/22)

I've finished up all the posters and their respective animations, however I still could not manage to create the AR filters. Since it's already close to the submission, I decided to not waste any more time in trying for the filters, and instead just use QR codes. I also started on the booklet, which would include information on the posters, as well as the solutions to the problems.

Feedback:
No feedback was given.
