LECTURE NOTES

Week 1: Module Briefing

Mr. Asrizal gave us a module briefing as well as a glimpse of our senior's works. The software we will be using are Adobe XD and Figma.

Week 2: Survey

Today's lecture was on surveys, then we did a task related to our final project. We need to know who our target audience in order to create a questionnaire for UX research. We must find out what are the issues the current users are facing, and by identifying the issues, we will find the questions to ask. Questionnaires should not be biased, they should be simple and straightforward, with no confusing sentences or jargons/ acronyms.

Week 3: No class

There was no class today, but on Saturday we had a project briefing by Mr. Allen.

Week 4: Consultation

Mr. Asrizal gave a recap on the project briefing and then we showed our progress on our survey questions.

PROJECT

UX Research

Week 1 (01/04/2021)

Mr. Asrizal provided an article on UX design that we had to conduct research on. In groups, we created a Google Slide presentation in about an hour which we then had to present our findings to the class.

Here is my group's UX research presentation:

UX Research Survey

Week 2 (08/04/2021)

Mr. Asrizal told us to analyse the Malaysia Airports Convergence website to understand what kind of website it is, and list out the issues of the website (both UI and UX). From the issues, we can then identify who the target audience is and what we can provide a brief demographic and start designing the survey questions.

We were introduced to Miro recently, so we used it to gather our findings. After we had everything, we transferred the information to Google Slides so it would be easier to present.

Week 3 (17/04/2021)

We had a project briefing today for our project on the Convergence Malaysia Airports website. We have to design the UX for a mobile app. Below is the project briefing:

Week 4 (22/04/2021)

Firstly, we had to analyse the Convergence website to find the issues of the website. With that, we created some survey questions. Below is our slides:

After showing our survey questions, Mr. Asrizal gave feedback on how we can improve them. He suggested we ask a few questions to get to know their demographic, such as:
  • Where do they usually get their travel info from
  • How often do they travel (pre-pandemic)
  • Their mode of transport when travelling
Furthermore, he suggested that we remove one question which was 'what made you exit our website?' as it is quite an open-ended question and the answers would be too broad.

After we made the necessary changes and adjustments, we sent out the survey.

For the following 3 weeks, the task guidelines are:
  1. Research compilation on the current Convergence (from you as a group + your surveys analysis)
  2. Branding guidelines for Convergence (Colour, Photo Treatment, Typeface guidelines etc2.)
  3. Personas Building (Define 4 Personas - your audience)
  4. References + competitor analysis (if any)

Week 5 (29/04/2021)

Feedback: The website analysis is very detailed. Mr Allen said we don't have to focus on travelling for the magazine website, we can expand it to lifestyle, food, etc, and we can look into domestic travel as well. Mr Asrizal suggested the 4 user personas can include 2 locals (solo traveller and family/couple traveller), international traveller, and a business traveller.

By next week, we should finish the survey analysis by next week. We sent out the survey a week ago but we weren't able to review much response, thus we have to gather more respondents. After that, we can create the empathy mapping based on the data from the survey.

Week 6 (06/05/2021)

Feedback: We had a quick consultation today where we showed our survey progress, and Mr Asrizal told us we needed to speed up a bit to finish the survey analysis, personas mapping and brand guidelines.

Week 9 (27/05/2021)

After submitting our final slides, we had another briefing for what our next task will be. With all the research and data we accumulated, we now have to plan for the mobile website starting with the low fidelity wireframe, then moving onto the high fidelity wireframe.

Week 10 (03/06/2021)

Feedback: The navigation links can only be until the secondary links, such as the lifestyle, destinations, etc. For the articles, just one is enough and the rest do not need to be linked. We can use the sources in material.io to help us as well. We do not have to do the corporate and other MAHB links, just the Convergence airports. The final presentation will be on week 15.

Week 12 (17/06/2021)

Feedback: The overall wireframe looks okay, but the footer should be changed to have a fixed bar at the bottom for it to look more like an app instead of a website. We should start with the high fidelity wireframe now, either in Figma or Adobe XD.

Week 13 (17/06/2021)

Feedback: After showing our high fidelity wireframe, the feedback we got was that the home page has a magazine feel, but the overall wireframe still looks like a web page, so study the mobile-first approach. The pages looks a bit old school and uninviting, also not so sure about the gradients.

Week 14 (04/07/2021)

Feedback: The image tone should be consistent, for example, the pics in the 'stay' section of the destination page are too different (some bright/dark, don't go well together). To achieve a good image tone, we can photoshop the pics (but will be time-consuming). We can also consider using a tone overlay, which makes the pics look more similar to each other.

REFLECTION

Learning UX design was something new to me so I made a lot of mistakes and learnt along the way. Some key points I noted was that you have to know your target audience really well in order to create a website/app that conveys the right message. Also, you have to know which device your users are mainly on - phone or desktop - so you can design the wireframes better for whichever device. I also learnt how to use a new software/tool that is Figma, which would hopefully come in handy later on too. It was very insightful to have a real client because we got feedback from 2 perspectives (lecturer and client). Designing wireframes has always been quite challenging for me as I don't have much experience in it, but my group and I tried our best for the final project website. I hope in the future I would be able to practise more on UX designs, whether it is for an app or website.
