REFLECTION

Experience

I can't believe I survived another typography module. I remember being in 1st semester, already terrified of what Advanced Typo would have to offer. Honestly speaking, this time wasn't as bad compared to sem 1. I think because we've experienced it before, it wasn't as difficult as the first class and we were also able to gauge the workload. Nonetheless, the assignments were still challenging and a lot. Not to mention having online classes now; it was a bit weird and unfamiliar at the start but now it does feel quite nice sometimes to stay in bed and be in class at the same time.

Observation

I think I could say that I've become much more comfortable with using Illustrator now. Doing work in Illustrator or Photoshop, FontLab or just about any design software is much easier now, compared to semester 1 when I had absolutely never touched editing softwares before. I work at ease and efficiency now that I know the tricks around the software.

As for the module, I do think online classes are kind of nice, however, a large part of graphic design is the physicality of the work. The feeling of being able to hold your design in a tangible form is very satisfying, knowing how much time and effort was taken in creating it. Hopefully, next semester holds the potential of going back to campus and being able to create proper tangible designs.

Findings

My interest and fascination with typography (and graphic design in general) will continue to grow even beyond these past two modules. I now look at everything with a designer's mindset- judging whether something is designed properly, the colour scheme, typeface, the reason why the designer made these decisions- they're all very important and good to keep my mind working creatively. Overall, I think this module allowed me to focus on the little things- attention to detail- and things I would usually never think about in design.
